Produced/Host Grady Flynn Guest Ninck Conti NORTH PROVIDENCE – For the first time in two decades, a North Providence baseball player experienced a “dream come true” and heard his name called in the Major League Baseball Draft. Nick Conte, who wrapped up his senior season as a reliever for the Duke University baseball team and was pitching for the Ocean State Waves of the New England Collegiate Baseball League, was selected in the eighth round (and with the 227th overall pick) of last week’s draft by the Kansas City Royals. Conte flew into Arizona last Thursday morning and took the 25-mile drive from Phoenix to the Royals’ spring training facility in Surprise to begin the next step in his baseball career. A physical, evaluations, and paperwork took up the majority of that day, but the following morning, he was working out with several other draft picks and rookie free agent signings. “I was hearing from a handful of teams on the possibility of (being drafted) late in day two (of the three-day draft), but more likely early in day three,” Conte said on Monday afternoon when asked about the draft. “But the scout from the Royals who wanted to sign me was super interested and came to a bunch of my games with Ocean State to watch me throw.” That scout was Billy Best, “and he kind of stuck his neck out for me and vouched for me,” Conte added, “and the Royals wanted to get me in the eighth round, so I’m super grateful for that.” Right now, Conte is in “kind of an orientation week” with the organization, “and it’s just trying to get us accustomed to the weather and the heat out here and also how things are run in the complex,” he added. “We’re just going out in the mornings for light practices and then working out afterwards, but it’s been great.” Produced in KBEV 6 Studios, Beverly Hills, CA "What's Right About Beverly." www.KBEV6.com
